Frequently Asked Questions

Original Medicare is administered by the federal government. Sometimes referred to as traditional Medicare, Original Medicare offers standardized health insurance coverage across all 50 states for seniors and some younger people with disabilities. It includes Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance).

Medicare Advantage, or Part C, is offered by private insurance companies. A Medicare Advantage plan combines the benefits of Parts A and B and often includes additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage. Prescription drug coverage is often included in a Medicare Advantage plan as well. These plans are referred to as Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plans.

If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, the premium may be lower. Additionally, if you qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, you may receive help with premiums and other costs.

It’s important to remember that Original Medicare was created to cover your healthcare basics. Wellcare Medicare Advantage plans deliver the additional benefits and daily support you need to feel completely cared for.

Most Americans aged 65 and older are eligible for Original Medicare coverage. However, those with disabilities, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) may also be eligible regardless of age.

Veterans are subject to the same costs and rules for Medicare coverage as other beneficiaries. Whether or not you pay for Medicare depends on your work history and the taxes you paid during that time. Those who are eligible for premium-free Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) won’t have to pay any premiums for that part of their Medicare coverage. However, there is a monthly premium for Medicare Part B (medical insurance).

To qualify for this premium-free Part A, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Worked at least 10 calendar years (40 quarters) at any job where you paid Social Security taxes in the U.S.
  • Are eligible for Railroad Retirement benefits
  • Have a spouse who has met one of the two previous requirements

Yes, you can have both a Wellcare Medicare Advantage plan and VA Benefits. A Wellcare plan may offer additional benefits that complement your VA coverage.

These two types of coverages work separately. Wellcare provides coverage for medical services when using doctors within the Wellcare network, while VA Benefits cover services received at VA facilities.

Having both Wellcare and VA Coverage can offer:

  • More comprehensive coverage and benefits
  • More flexibility in choosing doctors, hospitals, and other health care facilities
  • Access to medications not covered by the VA
  • Reduced wait times to see doctors and receive the care you need

A Wellcare Medicare Advantage plan may cover medications not covered by the VA. There may also be lower copays associated with the prescriptions you currently take if they are filled at a pharmacy in the Wellcare network. You can have prescription drug coverage from BOTH of your plans (Wellcare Medicare Advantage and VA).

To receive medications through your VA coverage you will need to have a prescription written by your VA doctor and fill your prescription at a VA location.

To receive medications through your Wellcare Medicare Advantage plan, you will need to have a prescription written by a doctor in-network with the plan and fill the prescription at one of the 60,000 in-network pharmacies.

Wellcare offers Medicare Advantage plans tailored specifically to meet the unique needs of veterans. These plans cover all the benefits of Original Medicare and so much more.

Wellcare benefits can include:

  • $0 or low monthly plan premium
  • Dental coverage
  • Vision coverage
  • Hearing coverage
  • Fitness benefits
  • Telehealth online doctor visits
  • Dario: a digital mental health and social support resource
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • A Wellcare Spendables® debit card for over-the-counter health items and dental, vision, and hearing costs
  • Worldwide Emergency Room coverage

And, unlike Original Medicare, Wellcare Medicare Advantage plans come with an out-of-pocket maximum so you have a lot fewer healthcare cost surprises.
