Am I eligible for
Medicare benefits?

You are eligible for Medicare benefits if you are:

  • age 65 and entitled to monthly Social Security benefits.
  • age 65 or older and have a spouse entitled to Social Security benefits, even if you are not.
  • age 65 or older and are the widow/widower of someone entitled to Social Security benefits.
  • under age 65 and have received Social Security disability benefits for at least 24 months.
  • entitled to Social Security benefits and need maintenance kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant, regardless of your age.

When can I enroll?

There are certain times when you can join a Medicare Advantage and/or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or make changes to your Medicare coverage. These are called “enrollment periods.”

Initial Coverage Election Period (ICEP)

This is the time when someone first becomes eligible and can sign up for Medicare. For most people, this is when they turn 65. You can join during the 7-month period that starts 3 months before and ends 3 months after the month of your 65th birthday.

Annual Election Period (AEP)

The Annual Election Period is the time each year when Medicare beneficiaries may switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to Original Medicare or vice versa or change Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plans. This period starts on Oct. 15 and ends on Dec. 7. If you make any changes to your coverage during this time, these will become effective on Jan. 1.

Special Election Period (SEP)

You may qualify to make plan changes based on special circumstances (e.g., you move, you are diagnosed with specific chronic conditions, you qualify for or lose eligibility for Medicaid).

Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

Medicare Advantage plan members can make a one-time election to switch Medicare Advantage plans or disenroll from their current Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare.
